LEAD GENERATION

What Is Lead Generation?

Lead generation is the process of turning attention into a contactable, interested prospect — someone who has identified themselves and given permission to be contacted about a specific thing they want. It sits between advertising, which buys attention, and sales, which converts interest into a paying customer.

What actually counts as a lead

A lead is a named, reachable person who has expressed interest in something specific. Three conditions, all necessary. Traffic is not a lead. An anonymous visitor is not a lead. Someone who downloaded a price list and gave a disposable email address is, at best, a lead of very poor quality.

This definition matters because the word is used loosely enough to make reporting meaningless. An agency counting every form submission and a clinic counting only people worth calling can describe the same month with numbers that differ by a factor of five, and both be telling the truth as they define it.

Where it sits in the acquisition system

Every stage loses volume. That is not a defect; it is the shape of the thing. The useful question is never 'how much did we lose' but 'which stage loses the most, and is that the stage we are trying to fix'.

  1. Traffic — people who see and click the ad
  2. Lead — people who submit an inquiry
  3. Qualified lead — inquiries that meet the business's criteria
  4. Opportunity — qualified leads who take an appointment
  5. Customer — appointments that convert to paid treatment

The two jobs lead generation does

Most underperforming funnels do the first job well and skip the second entirely, on the theory that more leads are always better. The cost of that decision is paid by whoever has to call them.

Capture
Capture is giving an interested person a reason and a mechanism to identify themselves: an offer, a landing page built for it, a form, and a booking step.
Qualify
Qualification establishes, at the point of capture, whether a prospect is worth a conversation — testing location, treatment, budget, and timing.

How the offer determines the lead

The offer is the single largest lever on lead quality, and it is usually treated as an afterthought. A free consultation attracts a different person than a priced consultation. A discount attracts a different person than an assessment. Neither is wrong, but they produce different leads and require different follow-up.

As a rule: the lower the commitment required to become a lead, the more leads you get and the less each one is worth. Asking for more — a phone number, a treatment preference, a preferred time — reduces volume and raises the proportion worth contacting.

What lead generation cannot do

It cannot make someone book. A qualified lead is a person who has raised their hand, not a person who has decided. The conversion from lead to booked appointment depends on how fast they are contacted, by whom, and how well that conversation goes — and those are operational capabilities, not marketing ones.

This is the boundary worth being explicit about with any agency. Producing qualified inquiries is a service that can be bought. Converting them is not.

Common mistakes

  • Reporting raw form fills as though they were qualified prospects
  • Removing qualifying questions to raise lead volume, then wondering why booking rate fell
  • Sending paid traffic to a homepage rather than a page built for the offer
  • Never feeding booking outcomes back, so qualification criteria are never corrected
  • Treating a lead as an outcome rather than the start of a process

Questions

What is lead generation in marketing?

The process of turning attention into a contactable, interested prospect — a named, reachable person who has expressed interest in something specific and given permission to be contacted about it.

Is a website visitor a lead?

No. A visitor is anonymous traffic. They become a lead only once they identify themselves and give you a way to reach them.

How is lead generation different from demand generation?

Demand generation creates interest where none existed. Lead generation captures interest that already exists, whether it was created by your own demand generation or by something else entirely.

In short

Lead generation is the capture-and-qualify step between attention and sales. Define what counts as a lead before measuring one, qualify at capture rather than leaving it to the front desk, and remember that generating a qualified inquiry and converting it are different jobs with different owners.
